The newly built £36.5m Caldicot comprehensive school in Monmouthshire, Wales opened its doors for the start of a new academic year this September.
The project has been jointly funded by Welsh Government and Monmouthshire County Council as part of the 21st Century Schools program in Wales. The stunning, open-plan building has been designed to accommodate 1,500 pupils. The spacious design encapsulates a mixture of theatre-style areas, a large hall and studio spaces equipped with interactive, state-of-the-art technology facilities. Prior to the school’s grand opening, headteacher Susan Gwyer-Roberts, had said how excited she was to welcome pupils into a 21st century school.
The school has been built with self-cooling technology for warm weather or heat release in the winter instead of traditional heating. Naco has supplied its high performing Vengen28 windows to form part of this energy-saving, sustainable natural ventilation system. The attractive, double glazed louvred windows can be powered manually to naturally ventilate the building, helping to form part of the self-cooling design expectations.
The innovative louvres can also provide the building with smoke ventilation, to protect the school and its occupants in the case of a fire. The high quality materials of the Vengen28 and its responsive control panel units efficiently operate the windows in the event of a fire alarm being triggered. The units automatically override the natural ventilation operation of the building’s management system by instantaneously switching its operation, ensuring that the windows act as a fully automated smoke vent to clear smoke and heat quickly from the building. This feature makes the Vengen28 compliant to EN12101-2 with its control panels fulfilling the requirements of EN12101-10, both stringent regulations for smoke ventilation systems.
The design of the Caldicot School continues to impress its occupants both in appearance and functionality. The final result really does have the wow factor and we are proud that Naco’s products have been chosen to both protect and enhance this 21st century school.
