Wimbledon Fortnight is as much a part of the great British summer as strawberries and cream.
Tennis fans lucky enough to get tickets for No. 1 Court now enjoy the fruits of a major development programme aimed at maintaining the Wimbledon Championships as the world's premier tennis tournament.
No. 1 fire safety protection
Specialist equipment from Actionair plays a role in ensuring a safe and efficient fire and smoke ventilation system for No. 1 Court, so that spectators, players and staff are protected in the event of a fire. The company has supplied the project with FireShield curtain wall fire dampers, SmokeShield combination fire and smoke dampers and AirShield air balancing dampers.
The new No. 1 court at Wimbledon forms part of the first stage of a long term plan and is an updated version of the successful design of Centre Court. The stadium structure is circular and provides seating for about 11,000 fans with improved comfort and ventilation without affecting the sightlines, lighting and acoustics. The essence of the new No. 1 Court is its openness and informality. The new stadium is countersunk into the hillside and will be surrounded by public restaurants, hospitality suites and retail and service units.
The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club commissioned Building Design Partnership as town planners, Wimbledon’s architects, civil, structural and service engineers and landscape, interior and graphic designers. Main contractor for Stage 1 is Try Construction Ltd. Actionair has also worked on the project in association with Senior Hargreaves and Colt Holland Heating.
